The Calusa worked this island for centuries. The Mackle brothers finished it in a decade. The result is a car-centric grid, but the densest stretch of Collier Boulevard is walkable enough for a few days without a rental. Here's how to work it.

Where to Stay

The big resorts cluster on the southern end of the beach, and their ratings track their size. JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort, at 400 S Collier Blvd, anchors the strip with a 4.5 rating from 6,097 reviews. Just up the road at 560 S Collier Blvd, Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort and Spa runs slightly smaller at 4.3 from 3,593 reviews. For a condo-style option, Marriott's Crystal Shores sits at 600 S Collier Blvd with a 4.6 from 1,396 reviews.

All three sit within a mile of the restaurants below—close enough that a beach day and a dinner walk are the same outing.

The Collier Boulevard Stretch

The north end, around the 200 and 700 blocks of N Collier Blvd, is where the density is. You can hit five or six spots on foot in an evening.

This is a seasonal place, and in season the sidewalks on Collier Boulevard carry real foot traffic between the resorts and the restaurants.

The Key Marco Cat, carved by the Calusa and recovered in Frank Hamilton Cushing's 1896 expedition, sits at the Marco Island Historical Museum on loan from the Smithsonian. The museum is a mile and a half from the resort strip—a long walk, but the one stretch of this island that connects the people who built shell mounds here from about 500 CE to the people who bought the land for $7 million and turned it into a retirement destination in the 1960s. The city reincorporated on 28 August 1997. The median home value here is $866,200, and the median household income is $104,105; 47.9 percent of residents hold a bachelor's degree or higher, and unemployment sits at 4.2 percent.

The island was built for cars, but the parts worth seeing are packed into a few blocks. If you're coming from a town like Everglades City 23 miles away—where the seafood festival draws a different crowd—Marco Island's walkable core will feel tight and deliberate, which is exactly what the Mackles intended.
